On October 19, 2016, Owen Ryan Buggey died from internal injuries. He had been taken to the hospital with deep bruises all over his body; a forceful punch to his stomach had caused a hole in his digestive tract, resulting in septic shock.
Owen's mother regularly left her boyfriend, Brent Fields, in charge of the boy and his four brothers. They testified in court that Brent would often punch the 3-year-old and his brothers with a boxing glove, whip them with a belt, trap Owen in time-outs for hours at a time, and dangle him by the legs from a second-floor window. They said their little brother sometimes vomited after the beatings, and eventually stopped talking, eating, running around, or playing.
