On October 5, 2019, Michael Jon Zdenek was killed by a neighbor. Michael had recently sold a car for several thousand dollars when Katrina Griffith came knocking on his door at night. To lure him out, she asked him about fixing a scratch on a vehicle. While they were looking at it, a masked man approached with a gun and ordered Michael to take him back into his house. When Michael resisted, the man shot him in the head and chest. The shooter proceeded into Michael's house to search for money and valuables, while Katrina delayed calling 911 for about 40 minutes.

Katrina originally identified Daequan Adams as her masked accomplice, but later denied it without explanation. While there were other indications that Daequan was involved, the charges against him were dropped because of "evidentiary problems," and Katrina alone was convicted of murder.
