On October 3, 2021, Andrew Talbot Rainer was killed in his home. Rainess Holmes and some accomplices broke in on Drew and several other students in the early morning. The invaders, described in early police reports as "3-4 male blacks, one armed with a gun," demanded valuables from the students. They shot 22-year-old Drew in the chest when he tried to protect a younger woman from their threats. Police were able to locate Rainess by tracking some of the electronics he stole, but he refused to help identify the other robbers.
