On October 1, 2017, Shane Anderson was at home, grading his middle school students' geography assignments. When his wife left the house to run some errands, she was met outside by a 16-year-old with a gun.
Deonte Green had invaded a nearby elderly couple's home, forced them to drive to an ATM to get him money, and forced them back to their home where he raped the 81-year-old woman. Then Deonte came over to the Andersons' house. On encountering Shane's wife, he put a gun to her head and ordered her inside. When Shane heard one of his daughters scream, he rushed the teen and tried to get the gun away from him, but in the struggle he was shot and killed.
During his trial, Deonte stated "I'm not a monster, I'm a misunderstood boy... God has a plan for me and you." His stepfather called Deonte's life sentence "inhuman" and said "My son is no killer... if he had seen Mr. Anderson, he would've taken off running. Mr. Anderson didn't give my son a chance to even run."
