On September 29, 2019, Raelynn and Payton Keyes died of neglect and heat stroke. The 3-year-old twins and their two brothers were in foster care; their caregiver, Claudette Foster, had taken them to her boyfriend's house to sleep overnight. In the morning, the boys (8 and 6 years old) told Claudette that their little sisters were nowhere to be found. After searching the neighborhood in the 92°F heat, the girls' bodies were spotted in the boyfriend's car. Explaining why the children were in foster care, their mother said "We got pregnant six months after we lost our first daughter. She died at three weeks. We found out we were pregnant with the twins. They were born 10 weeks early... We went through a lot after we lost our daughter, and we went through more after the girls were born... Just one thing after another." Before the twins died, their mother had been requesting to meet with authorities to discuss reports from her children that they had been "slapped in the face, pinched, [and] thumped in the head."
