On September 26, 2010, David Kenneth James was playing basketball with his daughter when a boy approached them. He asked if he could use his skateboard on the other side of the court, and David agreed. A nearby resident, Trevor Dooley, saw this from his home and came over to yell at the boy. When David defended the 14-year-old, Trevor flashed a gun from the waistband of his pants. David, a military veteran, attempted to disarm the man but was shot in the heart.

Originally sentenced to 8 years in prison for manslaughter, Trevor appealed and was released after 2 years for a new trial, in which he was eventually sentenced to 3 years of probation.
