On September 22, 2016, James Lewis Hill was waiting at a bus stop with some other riders. Tyrell Young and an accomplice, both 16 years old, came and robbed them at gunpoint. When the boys fled the scene, James began to follow them, but Tyrell turned back and shot James in the chest, killing him.

At trial, Tyrell's mother spoke of his participation in sports, his charitable acts and involvement in their church, and said he is "the most loving, caring son I have raised." She said Tyrell will take care of her when she's older, which is quite possible since he is expected to be released from prison by his early 40's. "I know God is not done with him," she said.
