On September 18, 2020, William Scott Smallwood and Steven Matthew Head were attacked by a stranger. They were on the patio of a restaurant when Michael Rhynes walked up and shot the two of them and another man. William, a 48-year-old father of four, died at the scene. Steven, a 24-year-old who had just purchased his first house, died at the hospital. According to the restaurant's owner, "Nobody had ever seen [Michael] before. It was a totally random act... there was nothing political about what happened."
