were killed in a shooting spree at the Navy Yard where they worked. Aaron Alexis used his security clearance to enter the facility while concealing a disassembled sawed-off shotgun. Aaron frequently complained about racial discrimination in the months leading up to the murders. He had served in the Navy a few years before, where he received many citations for misconduct and was arrested several times for gun crimes, which never led to any prosecution.
At a memorial service in the wake of the mass shooting, President Obama said "sometimes I fear there's a creeping resignation... We can't accept this... there's nothing normal about innocent men and women being gunned down where they work... There's nothing normal about children dying in our streets from stray bullets. No other advanced nation endures this kind of violence."
