On September 9, 2016, Carolyn Barnes was at home recovering from hip surgery when she answered her door to a visitor. Perry Ford knew Carolyn through his grandmother's church. He had recently stolen money from her, but she made him promise to atone for it; he came to help her from time to time with tasks around the house as she healed from her operation. However, on this visit he brought a stolen handgun with him and shot the 75-year-old retired teacher in the back of the head. A friend discovered Carolyn's body the next day.
