On September 8, 2014, Jill Halliburton Su was killed in her home. Dayonte Resiles bound the 59-year-old's hands and feet and stabbed her multiple times. Her son came home to find the house ransacked and Jill's nearly naked body lying in a bloody bathtub. The police initially suspected Jill's son but soon found Dayonte's DNA at the scene.

According to Dayonte's half-brother, "He was like a Robin Hood... He never, never stole in the black community. He'll go out to the rich towns and probably hit a couple houses," but "my brother ain't never killed." Dayonte's friends and family were adamant that he was framed, and at one point they helped him escape from court and evade recapture.

Dayonte's first trial ended with a hung jury; according to the foreperson, some jurors said "I don't want to send a young black male to jail for the rest of their life or have him get the death sentence." But in a second trial, almost 8 years after Jill's brutal murder, Dayonte was finally convicted and sentenced to life in prison.
