On September 5, 2020, Eddie Lee Nelson was killed in jail. His cellmate, 19-year-old Jayvon Hatchett, beat and strangled Eddie to death in the middle of the night.

Jayvon was awaiting trial for stabbing a store clerk. Upon his arrest, he had told the authorities that he attacked the man because he "felt the need to find a white male to kill" after viewing reports of police brutality. Despite Jayvon's dangerous racial animus, he had been placed in the same cell as Eddie, who was in jail on a parole violation.
