On September 2, 2019, Jack Luibel was lured into a trap. Talas Bonds and Erin Tillman posed as a young woman on a dating app, asking Jack to meet with her. Talas and Erin, who were 18 years old like Jack, had used this trick and other schemes to draw people to houses in the same area before, in order to rob them. According to another of their victims, "I was just about to knock on the door and [they] came up behind me on the steps and put a gun to my head." They robbed him and stole items from his car. Talas said "Should we kill him? I'm ready to kill him," but Erin said this would put too much attention on them. However, the next day they shot and killed Jack because he resisted them.
