On August 15, 2018, Sam Lavel Wingate was walking with a friend in the early morning when someone drove by and fired several shots at them from a car, one of which hit Sam in the back. An 84-year-old great-grandfather who had just lost his wife of 61 years the previous December, Sam died in the hospital a few days after the attack.

After another very similar random shooting by the same attacker, authorities were able to compose and release a sketch of him.
