On August 11, 2015, James Terry Yelvington was murdered in his driveway. In what was initially reported as a "random shooting," Alfred Jenkins robbed and killed the 60-year-old as he got into his car to leave for work in the morning. Terry and Alfred had once been coworkers when Terry reported Alfred for stealing union funds. According to Alfred's ex-girlfriend, the killing was part of a plan to get revenge and compensation for the money Alfred had to pay back because of Terry.

Although Terry and his wife had no children of their own, he spent half his life coaching girls' softball. One of his previous players said, "I've known him since I was 12 years old. He was my first softball coach. He did the right thing no matter what... He taught girls how to be strong and the best people they could be. It's a shame he was taken away so soon."
