On August 10, 2017, Ernest Martin Stevens was killed for his vehicle. Martin was parked near his home when Devon Dunham walked up to him and demanded his pickup truck. When Martin tried to drive away, Devon emptied his handgun, striking the 77-year-old four times, then left the scene empty-handed.
After first denying any knowledge of the shooting, Devon admitted to police that he had killed Martin. He was charged with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. But Devon's lawyer argued that he was in a "blind panic" because Martin tried to drive away, and "there was just not evidence that he intended to harm [Martin] or had utter disregard for human life." After deliberating for less than two hours, the jury found Devon not guilty of both charges.
