On August 8, 2019, Timothy Ray Haman was killed by a teenager. Timothy had recently relocated to the area and was helping his daughter move some furniture when Shannon Johnson, riding past on a bicycle, insulted Timothy. When Timothy responded, the youth turned around and approached the 41-year-old chef. Three other nearby bicyclists also approached to support Shannon, so Timothy tried to withdraw from the confrontation and go inside. Shannon pulled out a gun and fired several times at Timothy, hitting him in the chest, then rode away with the other young men.
Alleging racial bias, many in the community were upset at the speed with which authorities were able to apprehend the young perpetrator of the killing, which had been captured on a surveillance camera.
