On August 3, 2021, Christopher Lynn Hager and Gracie Ann Hager were murdered outside an apartment building. Well-known local entrepreneurs, Chris and Gracie were visiting the property in preparation to sell it when witnesses say the couple were attacked by Thomas Birl (also known as Heitsi-Eibib Ogun). He fired into the Hagers' vehicle, killing Gracie and wounding Chris, before walking over to Chris and shooting him in the head.

According to a prosecutor, "the murders were caught on tape" by a surveillance camera, but the graphic footage is being carefully withheld from public view "because, from what I understand, it's horrible." When police arrived at the scene, Thomas was barricaded inside the building. After a four-hour standoff, he lit the building on fire and surrendered.
