On August 2, 2016, Stephen Locke Merrill was taking a walk when he was attacked on the street. Jonathan Weathers was driving with his girlfriend, out on bail and looking for someone to rob, when he saw Stephen. Jonathan beat the 60-year-old grandfather and took his wallet, phone, and exercise tracker. He used Stephen's cash to buy some cigarettes. Stephen was found lying on the ground hours after the attack, and eventually died in the hospital.
