They got lost on the way TO the party and the road took them into a nearby town, Ozark, AL, where they found a convenience store and payphone at the intersection. This was when it was not uncommon for teens to not all have cell phones and nav. Speculation is they asked him for directions or perhaps he followed them after they called home.

It's an odd town with zero municipal planning. While nice about a hundred years ago Section 8 housing is now sprinkled next to historic million-dollar homes. There's not a "bad side of town" -- it all is.
