On July 26, 2021, Melody Gambetty was attacked in her home. In an act that authorities described as a "botched robbery," Brian Williams broke into Melody's apartment, where he beat and stabbed her. Using a handsaw, Brian dismembered the 67-year-old grandmother, then set her home on fire. He was spotted on surveillance footage leaving the scene with her suitcases; these were later found in his apartment, with Melody's head and some of her fingers and toes.

Brian's neighbors were surprised to hear about what he had done, with one of them recalling Brian's "million dollar smile." According to another, "That young man looked super to me — like a young kid just out of high school or college, and he sure surprised me."
