On July 18, 2012, David Anthony Grant was strangled to death. David had been tutoring 28-year-old Joni Donley in math; they met at a donut shop and got into an argument over payment for David's help, which led to Joni knocking David down and killing him in the parking lot. Although Joni admitted to attacking David, he also claimed that David used a racial slur against him in the moments before the killing. After some issues with a key witness, prosecutors dropped their case against Joni, explaining that there was "no competent evidence to rebut the argument that when Donley is called a 'n-word,' he was suddenly provoked to turn and strike Mr. Grant... While the cause and manner of death was deemed homicide by strangulation, the doctor's report also opined that cardiovascular disease was a 'contributory cause of death.'"
