On July 13, 2020, Jonathan Paul Shoop was killed by his own partner. As a relatively new policeman, Jonathan was paired with Mustafa Kumcur, a field training officer, when they were involved in a car chase with Henry Washington. Henry struck a pedestrian and crashed his car, then shouted "Come on, pig" before opening fire. During the gunfight, Mustafa somehow shot Jonathan in the head.
According to a prosecuting attorney, "The fact that Mr. Washington did not fire the fatal shot is immaterial to his culpability in this crime. But for Mr. Washington's directed attack on the officers, Officer Shoop would be alive today." After his arrest, Henry told the authorities that he started shooting at the officers because he didn't want them to confiscate his car, drugs, and illegal gun.
