On July 8, 1998, Rose Theresa Born was doing her usual early morning work, preparing her donut shop to open for the day, when 17-year-old Dennis Bartie came to rob her. During the robbery, he decided to kill Rose so that he could take her car to get home. He stabbed her over 30 times. It wasn't until 18 years later, while Dennis was in prison for another brutal attack, that he was linked to Rose's murder by DNA evidence.
