On July 7, 2016, Jennifer Brewer Rooney, Lorne Bradley Ahrens, Brent Alan Thompson, and Michael Leslie Krol were killed in two separate attacks with very similar motives. Lakeem Scott opened fire on a hotel, injuring one of the workers inside, then turned and began shooting at passing cars on a nearby highway. Jennifer, a 44-year-old mother of two, was one of the drivers he hit. Later that day, Micah Johnson attacked police officers assigned to monitor a "Black Lives Matter" march. He wounded 2 civilians and 14 officers, including Lorne (a father of two), Brent (a father of six), and Michael. According to the authorities, Micah was agitated about recent police shootings and "stated he wanted to kill white people, especially white officers." Like Micah, Lakeem was "upset at my black people getting killed with no justice. We do everything for this country, every damn thing. We give you all every damn thing, and we can't get no justice, no justice whatsoever."
