On June 29, 2021, Preston James Singleton was killed in a "hit and run" incident. Maurice Sumler struck Preston while running a red light; preliminary evidence indicates that Maurice had been using marijuana and traveling well beyond the speed limit when he hit the 5-year-old, launching his body over a hundred feet and fracturing his skull, ribs, and legs.

Preston died on the way to the hospital. Maurice abandoned his damaged car in a restaurant parking lot and went to work for the day.
