On June 5, 2017, Jonathan Joseph Besson was killed in his apartment. Earlier that day, Jonathan's roommate gave a ride to Jamarcus Tate and Donte Tate, despite being strangers. On arrival, the Tate brothers met up with Cardale Linson and the three young men carjacked Jonathan's roommate at gunpoint, forcing him into his own trunk. Although he escaped, his attackers returned to his home, entering with the keys they had stolen.

When Jamarcus, Donte, and Cardale encountered Jonathan, they robbed the 29-year-old and shot him in the chest, then drove around in the stolen car, acquiring cash with Jonathan's debit card.
