On June 3, 2014, Nichole Franco was awakened by a burglar. D'Marcus Tucker, a 15-year-old who lived in Nichole's apartment complex, sneaked into her home in the middle of the night, took a knife from her kitchen and entered her bedroom. D'Marcus accidentally woke Nichole in the process of stealing her wallet, so he fatally stabbed the 19-year-old aspiring pastry chef in the heart.
