It's easy, and perhaps comforting, and maybe even true on some level, to say that Brenleigh brought this on herself. That she partly deserved it for dating a half-breed creature who was fundamentally beneath her. Was she already lost because of that? Was she lost even earlier, when her parents abandoned their responsibility and allowed her to befriend whatever hominids she happened to meet? Or earlier still, when she entered a school system that taught her about "racial equality"?
