Three years ago today, Landen Hoffman was thrown from a balcony at a shopping mall, and plummeted about 40 feet to an unforgiving tile floor. I'm sure almost all of you are familiar with the “random” attack on this 5-year-old boy, but it’s worth taking a moment to remember.

As horrifying as it was, what Landen went through is not the kind of thing I normally write about here, since Landen overcame his terrible injuries and survived, despite the best efforts of his attacker. I do not write about such cases – nonfatal violent crimes by blacks against whites – because there are far too many of them, and the overwhelming majority are never reported except as a statistic. Over half a million attacks every year in the United States, or about 1500 every day.
