I'd think either the regulator IC (in the forground) or the big power transistor it uses for current (not shown) would be bad, but nope. It was that little transistor underneath the IC that was a dead short, even my component tester said it was a resistor. Fortunately, it's an S8050 type, easy to get. Put a new one in, and it's back in operation. Like I need another power supply...

Some of these you share look like the coolest desktop displays possible. If they only knew when they were built, that some people would rather see this than whatever the modern has to offer.

I got it from a local hamfest. Guy selling it knew it was bad but didn't say anything, but fortunately these are easy to fix. They're literally a reference circuit for the LM723.

I love the old stuff. Some of it was of eh quality, but you can't beat the looks on a lot of it.

When I get everything put back together I'll do a shot of the "So 1970s it hurts" faceplate.
