I have an 11 year old SD card reader from a brand named entryx. It support SD-SC (max. 2 GB), SD-HC (max. 32 GB) and SD-XC (max. 2 TB). This apparently only happens with SD-XC.
Maybe the adapter was not designed to handle SD-XC properly. At least it reads SD-XC at all. Our mid-2000s desktop computer had a built-in SD card slot which only reads SD-SC! When inserting SD-HC (SD-XC untested yet, probably same effect), it freezes up indefinitely until removing it again.
