I currently have a piece of hardware that uses a 4 wire connection, and I accidentally purchased this LED ribbon (amazon.com) with 3. I couldn't find much on jewgle besides differences in the LED controller (hyperion-project.org). I would appreciate any info on if/how the connections can be converted.

4 wires: VCC - R - G - B

It's PWM controlled

3 wires: 5V - SD out - ground

They aren't compatible.

Couldn't the 4th wire also be a data wire if the LEDs are addressable?

There's no data line on the 4 wires. Only high speed mosfet generating a PWM signal to dim/brighten each color channel that will generate different colors. With a high speed camera, you can see them blinking at different rate. The retinal persistence does the rest.

Ah so addressables have 5 wires then?

I'm assuming you're talking about the original ribbon, but what change do I have to make for the strip with 3 contacts to work (if possible)?

Missed the edit.

I edited again :P

On the bright side, jewmazon has a great return policy.
