Since my childhood, I noticed that some CD and DVD players have controls and features that can only be accessed via the remote controller, not via buttons on the device itself.

If a remote control was lost somewhere in the house or ran out of battery (we didn't have rechargeable NiMH's back then), we could not use some features of the device.
