Because there's an auto-mute when there's no video signal, which is meant to supposedly save energy.

But it would be good if users manually had the option to enable the audio input without needing a video signal. Also, I can't imagine that it saves significant energy.

Probably just another power user feature that manufacturers didn't pay attention to.

I was being sarcastic.

They in fact force you to have a signal which consumes more that if the display was blank/idle/shut off.

It's more of a convenience feature. Use case says if no video then no audio, so shut off that input so you don't get noise.
