Original batteries weren't holding a charge. Research indicated they were special "sub-C" type batteries, 3 of them... luckily Black & Decker made access to this compartment pretty easy:

What's inside (pic8.co) - 3 x 1.2 V "sub-C" batteries in series.
Replacement (pic8.co)
Soldered together (pic8.co)
Spiffy (pic8.co)

Charged for a few hours & is much more powerful than before. New batteries are improvements over the old (higher mAh (2200) & discharge rate).
