All trades have a level where you need "school" training. Though, You don't really need to "go to school" to learn" the basics. (Not to learn, you have to for stupid state requirements).

You will learn on the job, you will do as told and it will be explained to. You will then go to some classes (minimal) depending on the state and you will get your Journeyman's license. Etc, Etc, Etc. Keep doing the thing and you will be a master and you can start your own company if you want.
