ED visas should have a 2000%+ tariff.
We are exporting knowledge to the rest of the world. That is more valuable than jobs/manufacturing. You are teaching them on how to do it without you.
When I was in college back in the 90s, I had an academic scholarship to a fancy all girls Catholic school. I didn't want to party so chose to live on a floor ('the quiet floor') with mostly Japanese exchange students.
Eventually, we warmed to each other and I told them I had been told they were all from super rich Jap families. Turns out they were mostly upper middle class with parents who wanted them to learn English really well. I laughed and teased them because they all lived on my floor and I was the only non-jap they regularly talked to.
Turns out they got deep discounts and lots of grants from both their gov and ours. We got along, didn't party and the Caribbean exchange students dressed us up like Africans and thought it was great (I miss the 90s). It was almost as complicated as the kimonos the Japanese students had me try on.
Things are complicated.
I am a Straight White Man. There is not a single scholarship that I applied to that even looked at me back then (at least 15 years+ ago). - I applied to at least a few hundred BTW -
I have friends that are Men and Women that are from various places and the non-White's always had at least a small scholarship that would cover books, living expenses, etc.
I am not from either coast. This is what America has become. I want MERIT to be the determination for what people get. Not race, Not skin, not country of origin. First of all. Americans before everyone else.
I don't care who you are. I don't want MY LABOR going to give you benefits if you are not AMERICAN. I AM FUCKING DONE.
Sorry, this rant is not directed at you. I have been reading the news as I always do I am not having the best day.
I only got my scholarship because my mom was involved in the gay rights scene in the late 90s. Somehow she met nuns and they suggested it and I applied and was pushed through.
I got a full academic scholarship knowing it was not on my full merit but a lot of the girls I went to school with were interesting across the board. Stupid rich, stupid ghetto, foreign, all of us extreme in some way including sports.
I want Americans to be literally first. If we have extra shit, then fine. But honestly, even though I really liked some of those girls, I'd rather deserving Americans have those slots in my dorm/classes.
My job now is under a metric shitton of Indians. My mom calls my boss' boss the bosshole. I quote like my boss even though he is Indian. I still think he was given way too much. There is an american who can do his job, no doubt. I'm just grandfathered in. I know that won't last. My mom says she has a spare room. I'm freaking 46. I shouldn't have to worry about that.
