Now is the time to gather up technical books on STEM subjects from undergraduate level and up. The world is getting stupider at an alarming rate, preserving actual scientific knowledge clandestinely will likely be required as a new age of Lysenkoism sweeps through technical education facilities around the Western world. It will likely become illegal to sell such books (which contain dangerous misinformation) and shortly afterwards, it will become illegal to own them. They will need to be hoarded in secret and shared only with trusted associates and family (if that).

The professor should relish his firing, start an online Organic Chemistry course, charging only a few dollars per lecture, he could reach many thousands of people. Making a shit load more money than he would have and teaching orders of magnitude more students. The university system is terminally corrupted and broken, it is a captured Neo-Marxist indoctrination facility and as an educational institution is worse than useless.

I can tell you've given this some serious thought. I hope you're wrong, but given the current climate, I suspect you're absolutely correct.

After the second midterm for which the average hovered around 30 percent. From the nytimes article on the firing.

Unless the university is using this as their cancel scholarship class, this guy sucks at teaching. Otherwise, you are implying that across the board the system has dumbed itself down to the point where top scoring 4.0 students, have been coddled all the way until this very point. Then suddenly in a class full of future doctors half the class gets single digit scores. To put that shit average in a different viewpoint, the professor successfully conveyed an average of 30% of the subject he was trying to teach, to a class of 382 students.

Organic Chemistry is a required class for admission to premed/med school. Many universities use it as the weed out class for people trying to get into med school.

Also? It's hard. Go find the scores nationally for organic chemistry classes.

Guy sounds like a great teacher.

sign of the times to come.

Hopefully he will change to a real university now

"Celebrated organic chemistry professor Maitland Jones Jr. had high standards, and we can't have that in 2022," writes the leftist author and teacher Freddie deBoer. "NYU students—who are, by any rational measure, some of the most privileged people on planet earth—organized a petition and got him fired. I hope you never get treated by one of the doctors who emerges from this mess."

Some professors want to teach the way they have for many years and that just doesn't work anymore. Especially when they mix the old and new ways. Like it or not, students are taught to learn certain ways now that don't work with the old school. Things are streamlined differently and sometimes older cats don't adjust.

I have had a couple of professors that couldn't transition, and the whole class suffered because of it. The ones that are arrogant about it are even worse. Had a stats professor that openly admitted that he had his own order of operations that was based in no convention other than his own preference, and if you didn't follow it, fuck you. He is a prick and I am glad he doesn't teach the lower class anymore.

That shit doesn't work anymore. And anyone wanting to make some point about that being how a boss might be, fuck off, students pay to go to school, not the other way around. The shit is already filled with enough BS that no student needs to be dicked around by a professor that wants you to read between the lines while every other instructor is spelling the course out point-blank.

Award winning researcher doesn't mean good teacher. I have a professor right now that is a venerable rock-star in his field. He mumble-farts his way through a sleeping class, doesn't communicate assignments well, and is surprised students are confused about homework that is located some where in a book we have no assignments attached too.

Fuck this OChem professor. If he got fired a being an unreasonable cunt, than good. Too many other good professors being canned for their opinions.

I'd guess, based on the article, that this teacher rocks, because he has years of student and institutional awards to prove it.

82 students out of 350 complained that he was too hard. That's 23%.

Given the likelihood that the whiny students solicited the entire class for their petition, that means 77% of the students thought that the the teacher was just fine, and refused to sign the petition.

Coincidentally, that number, 23%, is close to the percentage of FOREIGN students that attend NYU, and, being ineligible for federal grants, pay full price to attend.

The Dean's immediate cowtowing to the 23% suggests that these were either diversity admits, or they were primarily the full-tuition-paying foreign students, and he was afraid of either cancel-culture backlash in NYC, OR he was afraid of losing the income foreign students provide (again, American students never pay full tuition.)

Liberal Universities are, at their adminstrative core, for-profit businesses exploiting a tax-free status to enrich their administrators and tenured staff by overcharging, underdelivering, and stealing patents created by their qualified students.

Administrstively, almost everything else is secondary to that.....except diversity/equity (esp in NYC)

This guy taught for the love of teaching, not for the cash. That's why he was teaching at NYU, untenured, after retiring from Princeton.

He is, without a doubt, a fabulous teacher.

The 23% are incompetent, unqualified, entitled little children.

The fact that the NYTimes reported this event makes me think that these were diversity admit students.

Maybe I'm wrong then, that's what I get for not reading the article and drunk posting my own projections.

Doing a little more research this guy botted his 5 star reviews on rate my professor. https://www.ratemyprofessors.com/ShowRatings.jsp?tid=1052652

I thought maybe he was just polarizing, but seeing multiple(I played x game through class) 5 star reviews, fuck him. He is a shit professor who is trying to pump fuck zoomer sentiment in order to save some of his reputation for being a bad professor.
