A lot of these people got student loans to not only afford school but also to pay all their bills so they didn't have to work. So you have these enormous loans that are essentially a mortgage they'll carry for a long long time.

Actually way worse than a mortgage if you look at the laws and practices involved. If you default they will double what you owe and you can not discharge them through bankruptcy. I heard radio guys talking about how doing away with 10k in student loan debt is UNCONSTITUTIONAL. Not a peep about the fact the loans them are also UNCONSTITUTIONAL.
