When my son was 5 years old, he and his best friend, also a 5 year old boy, were playing in my son’s room. I walked in to do something and his friend is sitting on the bed reading a book out loud. I was stunned. I gave him another book and said read this. He read every thing I gave him. I immediately went next door and asked his mom, “Do you know your son can read?!” as if she didn’t. She laughed and said, “Yes, but he can’t ride a bike like your son can.” It freaked me out at first, but I worked hard at letting it go. At 31 years old now, he is smart, and loves to read. He’s also quite the athlete. It’s hard not to compare your child to others, but it’s generally better not to put too much emphasis on it.
