I think MIT was afraid of losing it's cache as the school of smart people. More than any other school MIT is known as the school of seriously smart people. Much more so than Harvard etc.
It's all MIT has since most don't go into finance and make gazillions but rather go into engineering and tech where they have to actually be able to do something.

I have a cousin who's an MIT grad. (Super smart fucker, he is.) He constantly laments about the degradation of his degree. I remind him that he went on scholarship and that it didn't cost my aunt and uncle much money, but I understand his point.
