It's not a democracy on purpose. The authors of the Constitution understood what an unmitigated disaster straight democracy leads to. There's a reason for all the checks and balances that were built in to make it a republic and not a democracy. Most of them have been removed and we have continued our downward slide as a result. A democrcy always fails soon after a majority figure out that they can vote themselves other people's money.
