This is one of the secrets that is keeping the system going. If you used something like git and had books/courses edited by people learning the material, then you would have a better product. By the time faculty has the free time and reputation to write a book they are very detached from the learning process. There should also be courses recorded and paid for by the free market (the better videos get more customers, and more money).
