I don't think it was by accident that the education system doesn't talk about this. We're now a couple generations removed from the USSR and East Germany, and the youngers never had a relative from the old country who just up and left everything behind to come to the USA to escape repressive Communism.
Those times are as much history now as WWII was to me, but the threat of repressive regime was still visible when I was a kid. It's not really, anymore (China does a good job of hiding it, and North Korea may as well not exist) so the radicals can begin to float socialistic ideas that, in the end, would result in another Soviet Union.
