I have quite a number of years invested in academia. This doesn't mean I know everything - it means I've learned how to learn. So, if there's something y'all want to know about, I'm happy to learn more about it myself and see if I can encourage others to spend some time learning.

I'm running low on time, which means I'll have less time to spend on busy sites like Voat - but I'll have time to deal with slower moving sites and topics.

I absolutely don't know everything. That's not why I went to school. I pursued higher education to learn how to learn.

My specialty is applied mathematics (pure math is just masturbation and applied math gets shit done). But, I'm fairly fluent in the other hard sciences (with a preference for physics). So, I'd be happy to learn along with you should it be a topic I'm not well versed in.

Like I said, they'd end up being mostly slow-moving threads. Maybe we pick a subject each week and hash it out on a Sunday afternoon? I'm pretty old and there's a ton of stuff I don't know. There won't be a tomorrow, so I might as well learn it today.

I'd prefer to leave it to the hard sciences and mathematics. Those are my preferred subjects. I do a weekly guitar thread on Voat - but a weekly science or math thread might be kind of fun.

Thoughts?

I had an intense engineering university education, but before that I was all about liberal arts. One place we didn't go too much was philosophy and I'm stabbing about trying to get a handle on what will fill that gap.

(yes it's a huge wide open ask)

edit: I mean you are the buddah and all

I love philosophy.

What many people don't seem to understand is that the Ph in Ph.D. is for philosophy. Translated to English, it's Doctor of Philosophy.

Mathematics is a philosophy known as "logicism" and the mathematics is the language used to express ideas and to evaluate them for logic.

I'm going to make a few notes and keep this thread stickied for a while.

thread too sticky, can't move, wat do

Friction... We need to overcome friction and stiction.

Force is the answer. The answer is frequently force!

I do have a script for v/Mathemagician that lets people use MathJax on the sub. I'll have to dig it out and see if I can make it work with Poal. It shouldn't be too difficult.

I think it would be interesting.

I would like to learn how social engineering works. What tools do they use to steer public opinion and also how they weaponized shit posting to flood the internet with useless crap to censor the truth

The only social engineering that I'm familiar with is from the hacker culture and is actually an excellent tool. With some work and planning, and a few crafty methods, you can get people to do something like click a link or even tell you the administrator password for their system.

It's an interesting topic, but I'm not familiar with anything on a larger scale. I'm more than happy to look - though I'll probably prioritize the hard science disciplines.

My vote would probably have to be quantum mechanics. I’ve sat through mits open courseware on the subject yet still find my mind blown.

So much has changed since my time in academia. I've tried to keep up and am sorta fluent in quantum physics. I love me some particles. So, that's definitely a great idea.

I'm going to leave this stickied for now and see if I am able to actually get some stuff organized. They'll be slow threads (I assume). My garden goes into the ground in about a month and that's going to limit my free time - which is already being spoken for.

But, I want to see your site get off the ground. So, if I am able to help get a few ideas going then maybe they will help fill it with content that people can find educational. There's a whole lot of room for me to learn more.

One of the best ways to ensure you truly understand something is to try explaining it to someone who knows nothing about the subject. We can learn it together! ;-)
