Yeah, that is a kind of fucked up part of the system. Any "forgiven debt" is now considered income so you have to pay taxes on it. None of it makes sense but the tax man want's their cut to matter what happens and how it could hurt you.

I am glad you didn't get completely fucked but that should not have happened in the first place.
