I became disabled so my student loans were forgiven. When my loans were forgiven, that money became "income" in the eyes of the IRS and they didn't give a shit about any disability. It took a while but I was able to eventually get it all taken care by an attorney who was also a veteran like me. I almost lost my home, which I had paid off, as well as everything else I owned.

Yeah, that is a kind of fucked up part of the system. Any "forgiven debt" is now considered income so you have to pay taxes on it. None of it makes sense but the tax man want's their cut to matter what happens and how it could hurt you.

I am glad you didn't get completely fucked but that should not have happened in the first place.
