$173K sounds realistic, don't forget what income tax will do to this number.

I never believed in marriage but was threatened and ended up doing it freaking twice. First one sucked and my ex used my name and social and took out credit cards in my name and ran them up in retaliation. I ended up filing for bankruptcy. Freaking crazy.

Ended up with another guy shortly after and he trapped me by saying he would get and keep a job if I married him and if I didn't he would have me put in a mental institution and put my cat in the pound. So I did it. The lesbian who was the justice if the peace took me aside and said in good conscience she couldn't marry is because I seemed so reluctant. I told her if she didn't marry us if be worse off. She wanted to help but really there was nothing she could do. When I finally got the guts to divorce him later and hope he wouldn't actually lock me up, my lawyer told me I had to cash out my 401k and bribe him to sign the docs. She said I'd it went to court the judge would punish me and make me pay alimony to him. She said it was a 1 out of 3 judge chance and she said to keep out of court if possible. It sounds insane but my life has been weird to say the least. That lawyer ended up hardly charging me anything and helped me with so many different legal documents to get away and eventually I ran to my mom's across the country. I was lucky I had a remote job and an understanding boss. The lawyer even told me how to protect myself from his lies at work by contacting HR and using certain phrases etc. It was nuts. I would never do the marriage thing again.

My bf was told by his granddad to never marry. He says looking back on it he meant it in a different way than he took it -his grandfather was devastated by his wife's passing. But honestly I don't see the point. It's just a contract that for some reason changes one partner the second it is signed. If we need a legal contract for something we will just do that lol. Makes us sound weird but we e been together for almost 10 years now and it's working.

I can understand your hesitancy about marriage after being burned twice. I'm hesitant after one! I think marriage is a formal commitment and dedication to each other, and to create a stable home for children. If you're not planning to have kids, marriage isn't as much of a necessity for many. I wish you the best in your endeavor.
