Socialism, and communism, always rely on force. In order to redistribute, you must first take from those who have been productive. This is the primary moral evil of these ideologies. Then you give to those who have not been productive. Very occasionally, people are unproductive through no fault of their own, due to accident or illness or just bad luck, but in the majority of cases, the unproductive are so because they are a combination of stupid and/or lazy. Punishing the smart and conscientious for the benefit of the stupid and/or lazy will only ever end in suffering.

Add in to that the occasional psychopath, who will use the collective resources for their own benefit without any concern for others. These type of individuals are drawn to positions where they have power. As such are highly drawn to politics where they can assume power of the distribution of such resources.

Socialism, or communism, or pretty much any form of social organization, can work on a small scale. But only within a small (below 200 individuals) homogenous community where all members share the same beliefs and interests. I.e. a primative tribe. In such societies, any individual who did not comply with the group's ideology would be expelled or killed in order to maintain the system. On a large scale, collectivist ideologies always fail.

Socialism works great right up until you run out of other people's money.
